Ottawa Braves Women’s Soccer Faces McPherson College
OTTAWA, Kan. – The Ottawa Braves faced a tough challenge in their latest women’s soccer match, falling to McPherson College with a final score of 3-1. The game held on Saturday saw the Braves struggle to capitalize on their early opportunities.
Match Overview
Despite starting strong, the Braves were unable to convert early chances into goals. Kyndel Adams’ shot was blocked early in the third minute, and Cennet Donahue’s attempt in the fourth minute missed the target. However, the turning point came in the eighth minute when McPherson’s leading scorer, Jordyn Smith, successfully converted a penalty kick, putting the Bulldogs ahead 1-0.
Goalkeeping and Defensive Efforts
Following the opening goal, Braves’ goalkeeper Makena Tapia made several critical saves to keep Ottawa in the match, stopping shots in quick succession during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh minutes as McPherson continued their offensive pressure.
First Half Highlights
Although McPherson was dictating the pace, Ottawa managed to create their first solid attempt on goal in the 27th minute. Emma Stillings’ shot forced McPherson’s goalkeeper Emily Singletary into her first save. The Braves kept pushing, with Laura Quijada setting up Melissa Grohmann for a near equalizer in the 33rd minute, but Singletary’s diving stop prevented the goal.
Ottawa’s Ella Stillings and Charlotte Gatehouse also came close to scoring, with Gatehouse’s shot just before halftime going wide, resulting in a corner kick that Ottawa could not convert.
Second Half Developments
As the second half commenced, McPherson swiftly increased their lead. Just after the whistle, Lena-Marie Winkler, who had substituted for Tapia, was called into action as Smith struck again early, challenging her with a close-range effort. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the 51st minute when Kennedy Halter scored from a stunning 35-yard shot that sailed past Winkler, raising the score to 2-0.
Jordyn Smith secured her team’s third goal in the 88th minute, putting the Bulldogs up 3-0 with her second strike of the match.
Late Game Action
In a dramatic finish, Ottawa found the back of the net in the dying moments. Ellie Fitzpatrick capitalized on a defensive misplay by McPherson, skillfully navigating past two defenders to score, ending the game at 3-1.
Looking Ahead
The Braves will now shift their focus to their upcoming matches, with a challenging game scheduled against Evangel University. The match will take place on October 7, 2026, at 5 p.m. on the road.
