Jagex Unveils RuneScape 4 Development at RuneFest 2026
At the recently held RuneFest 2026, Jagex confirmed the development of RuneScape’s fourth installment, tentatively titled RS4. This announcement marks an exciting return to a numbered sequel following the launch of RuneScape 3 in 2013. The new game is being built using the Unreal Engine, although specifics regarding the engine version remain unclear.
Teaser Trailer and Game Setting
During the event, attendees were treated to a CGI teaser that showcased a captivating environment featuring a verdant valley, floating islands, and a dramatic encounter involving a dragon rider and a three-headed dragon. Jagex has indicated that RS4 is still in the early stages of development, with a dedicated team working on it, and emphasized that the game is still “a few years away” from release.
Origins of RS4
Interestingly, RS4’s journey began not as a standalone title, but as an extension for RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Jagex’s Unreal Engine 5 survival game. Initial ambitions evolved following feedback from playtesters who expressed a desire for a more traditional MMO experience set in the Dragonwilds universe. The expansion had originally been slated for a 2027 release but has since developed into its own independent project.
Storyline and World
The storyline of RS4 will take place years after the events of Dragonwilds, beginning in the same region known as Ashenfall. Notably, RuneScape 3, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds are all set to continue running alongside the development of RS4, ensuring plenty of options for players during its creation.
Future Developments
As the development of RS4 progresses, details surrounding monetization strategies and potential for progress transfer from RuneScape 3 remain unannounced. Fans can expect to wait some time before experiencing actual gameplay footage or further insights into the mechanics and features of this awaited title.
