Officer-Involved Shooting Incident in Albuquerque
On October 3, 2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a 26-year-old man was fatally shot by a police officer during an encounter that escalated after a foot chase. The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public following this incident.
Incident Overview
The altercation began when an NMSP officer observed two individuals jaywalking near Cochiti Road and California Street around 12:11 p.m. The officer approached and identified that the men were being detained. One of them, identified as Izaeah Elajah-Amar Washington, reportedly fled the scene on foot after disregarding the officer’s commands to stop.
Foot Chase and Confrontation
Following Washington’s attempt to escape, the officer pursued him on foot. The two men eventually grappled on the ground during the chase. It was at this point, according to NMSP, that Washington drew a handgun and fired at least one shot, narrowly missing the officer.
Officer’s Response
In response to the gunfire, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Washington at least once. Despite being promptly transported to a nearby hospital by emergency responders, Washington later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed that the firearm used by Washington was reported stolen; fortunately, the officer was not injured during the incident.
Ongoing Investigation
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau, in collaboration with a Multi-Agency Task Force that includes the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and the Albuquerque Police Department, has initiated a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The identity of the officer involved will remain confidential until the completion of witness interviews, as he is currently on standard administrative leave.
