The Government is to consider a €3 million “safe fund” for women in domestic violence situations who need an urgent escape, Minister for Public Expenditure Jack Chambers has confirmed.

“A quick escape can make the difference between a life saved and a life lost,” she said. “But sadly, the difference between escape and remaining trapped can be heartbreakingly mundane – [money] for a taxi, a deposit for a flat, a new phone,” Bacik said.
The fund, she suggested, could be a non-means-tested grant for “immediate financial support to survivors of domestic violence when they need it, to be administered by Women’s Aid”.
“Perpetrators should be the ones removed from a violent home” but “State inertia” was making it “really difficult and sometimes impossible for those who experience domestic abuse to escape from violence”, she said.
