A Lifelong Passion for Baseball

For Bella Espinoza-Molina, baseball has been a profound part of her identity since she was five years old. Her journey began when a friend’s team sought an additional player in Little League®; a simple offer turned into a fervent love for the game. Bella cherishes early memories spent with friends and her father, Ciro, who not only coached her but also fostered her dedication to the sport.

A Strong Family Legacy

Baseball is woven into the fabric of the Espinoza-Molina family. Bella’s father played professionally in Mexico and has been a pivotal influence in her career. His guidance extended beyond skill development; during times of self-doubt, he encouraged Bella to reflect on her love for the game. The foundational question they often revisited was simple: “Do you still love the game?”

As long as the answer was affirmative, Ciro and Bella’s mother ensured she pressed on, regardless of external opinions.

From Player to Teammate

Years later, Bella reunited with her father as teammates in a Sunday baseball league, a rewarding full-circle moment. “He constantly tells me how proud he is of me. It’s one of his biggest accomplishments to play alongside me,” said Bella.

Ascending to Professional Baseball

At the age of 23, Bella has taken a significant step in her career by joining the Women’s Professional Baseball League (WPBL). Her path serves as a beacon for young girls aspiring to carve out their place in baseball.

Bella isn’t the only athlete in the family; her sister Sophia is also pursuing a career in baseball. As Bella puts it, “She is my built-in catching partner.”

Favorite Little League Memories

Reflecting on her early days, Bella noted, “My favorite memories are just being able to hang out with friends and my dad while he coached me. I fell in love with it naturally.”

Facing Challenges on the Field

As she progressed, being the sole girl on her team presented challenges. “It was lonely, especially because a lot of the guys didn’t really see me as a teammate in the beginning. I had to prove I could contribute.” This experience significantly bolstered her confidence.

Overcoming Doubts

Bella credited her parents for their unwavering support during tough moments. “They would ask, ‘Do you love this game?’ If I said yes, they affirmed that nothing else mattered.” This mentality equipped her to continue pursuing her passion for baseball.

Bella believes in the importance of resilience: “Be stubborn, be tenacious. If anyone tells you no, prove them wrong and work harder.” She emphasizes the strength it takes to rise above challenges as a female player.

Bella feels a deep connection to the new generation of female baseball players and the opportunities emerging for them. “It brings me to tears, honestly,” she said, reflecting on her childhood aspiration to play professionally, which is now a reality for many.

A Message to Her Younger Self

If Bella could speak to her five-year-old self, she would affirm, “Just keep on fighting. If anyone says you can’t do it, find somewhere to play. There is a place for you; you just have to fight for it.”
