CWA Critiques Court Ruling on NCAA’s Transgender Policies

CWA’s Response

Penny Nance, CEO and President of CWA, voiced strong disapproval of the court’s decision, stating:

“It’s appalling and inexcusable for a judge to rule that the NCAA is above the law, and that a man’s identity takes priority over women’s rights. This ruling effectively upholds the NCAA’s repulsive policy enabling sexual harassment and discrimination against female athletes.”

Nance emphasized that the NCAA’s actions are particularly troubling as the organization seeks federal protections while neglecting the rights and safety of female athletes. CWA remains steadfast in its advocacy for the protection of women’s sports.

Title IX Compliance Issues

CWA argues that regardless of whether the NCAA accepts federal funds, it plays a pivotal role in ensuring that member institutions adhere to Title IX regulations, which prohibit sex discrimination in education and athletic programs. Nance stated:

“If the NCAA doesn’t comply with Title IX, no university should be allowed to be a member of the NCAA.”

Legislative Landscape

The situation has amplified calls for legislative action, particularly following the U.S. Senate’s approval of the Protect College Sports Act. Nance noted this ruling highlights a disconnect with federal civil rights laws, underlining the necessity for Congress to take decisive action against perceived violations by the NCAA.

Public Opinion

A CWA poll indicates a significant majority of Americans, over 69%, express concern regarding the inclusion of biological men in women’s sports and locker rooms. This data suggests that the issue is a priority for many voters as they approach upcoming elections. The organization has also reported that trans-identifying males have claimed over 2,293 gold medals in U.S. competitions, affecting the standing of female competitors.
