Athletic Achievement Announcement
Macalester College has recognized first-year student-athlete, Marley Zhang, as the MIAC Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week for the period concluding on September 27. This accolade follows her impressive performance at the September Showdown, where she not only earned the medalist title but also played a pivotal role in leading the Scots to the team championship.
Record-breaking Performance
Zhang displayed remarkable consistency throughout the tournament, navigating two different golf courses with skill. She achieved identical rounds of 71 at Oneka Ridge Golf Course on Saturday and at Faribault Golf Club on Sunday, culminating in an outstanding two-round total of 142. This score not only secured her victory by three strokes but also established a new school record for a 36-hole tournament. Furthermore, this performance is noted as the fifth-lowest in the history of MIAC women’s golf, breaking the previous record of 145 set by Bailey Lengfelder in two instances.
Team Triumph
With Zhang’s exceptional play, the Scots overcame a nine-stroke deficit after the first round against St. Catherine. In a remarkable display of resilience, they finished with a school-record score of +6 (294) in the second round, winning by a narrow margin of one stroke.
Season Highlights
This recent achievement marks Zhang’s second victory in the current season, having previously secured first place at the CSB Invitational held on September 5-6. Across four events and eight rounds, she has maintained an impressive stroke average of 73.9 thus far.
Upcoming Championship
Looking ahead, the Macalester women’s golf team is poised to compete in the MIAC Championships, scheduled for October 2-4 at Braemar Golf Course in Edina, Minnesota.
