The Rydman Family: Leading Spec’s Success in Texas
The Rydman family has transformed an unexpected venture into a successful beverage retail powerhouse in Texas. Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods operates 220 locations across the state, generating revenues exceeding $2 billion annually. Despite their prolific success in the competitive retail market, the family members had no intention of entering the beverage industry.
A Commitment to Continuous Improvement
John Rydman, the current owner and president, reflects on his 53 years in the business, stating, “We spend every day trying to get better in every facet of what we do.” His co-owner and wife, Lindy Rydman, inherited the business from her father, Carroll “Spec” Jackson, while their daughter, Lisa Rydman-Lindsey, now serves as executive vice president and director of marketing, marking a significant generational shift in the company’s leadership.
“There’s something about having your family around you,” Lisa notes, highlighting the loyalty and commitment they share in the business. As testament to their dedication, the Rydman family has been awarded the 2025 Market Watch Leaders Retailers of the Year, marking Lisa’s first win and John and Lindy’s historic consecutive recognition.
Roots of Family and Community Engagement
Spec’s legacy began in 1962 when Carroll Jackson opened the first store in Houston, later joined by his wife, Carolynn. Lindy started working in the family business as a teenager while John joined after marrying Lindy in 1972. Reflecting on their unexpected journey, Lindy shares, “None of us intended to be in this business,” emphasizing the twists of fate that brought their family to retail.
Lisa graduated with a psychology degree and sought a career in organizational psychology until she decided to join Spec’s in a full-time capacity. In her 30 years with the company, she has taken an active role in the strategic aspects of the business, working closely with her parents to maintain their family ethos.
A Dynamic Business Model
All three Rydmans have distinct roles but actively participate in various aspects of the daily operations. Lindy’s focus remains on human resources, while John continues to drive sales strategies and long-term planning. Their approach fosters a culture of knowledge-sharing among the over 5,000 employees at Spec’s, who are encouraged to embody the “Texas friendly” spirit.

Expansive Inventory and Evolving Trends
Spec’s extensive inventory features over 58,000 stock-keeping units (SKUs), with shops typically offering 10,000 to 30,000 items tailored to local preferences. As one of Texas’s largest retailers, Spec’s plans to continue expanding, adding more stores while maintaining a focus on quality customer experiences.
John Rydman highlights the challenge of a changing market, as shifts in consumer preferences have affected sales trends. Particularly, he notes the rising demand for healthier options and THC products, which have started to compete with traditional alcohol sales. Despite these challenges, spirits make up the bulk of sales at Spec’s, followed by wine and beer.
Product Popularity and Adaptation
Tequila is currently the standout spirit category, exemplified by the popularity of Don Julio Reposado. While spirits account for 70% of Spec’s sales, the wine segment faces competition from lower-calorie options and THC beverages. Some of the store’s best-selling wines include Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay and La Marca Prosecco. Beer sales have also faced declines due to the rise of seltzers and THC products.

Community Commitment and Future Growth
As Spec’s prepares for future growth, the family remains committed to supporting their local communities through charitable initiatives. Their monthly charity program has provided significant support to various organizations throughout Texas. “Being involved in our communities is of the utmost importance,” Lisa explains.
The Rydman family’s dedication to their core values—community engagement, customer satisfaction, and continuous improvement—ensures that Spec’s not only thrives as a business but also serves as a lasting family legacy. As they look ahead, they aim to expand their reach while keeping their operations firmly rooted in Texas.
