President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will deploy more money, resources and technology to tackle gender-based violence and femicide following the killing of women in Ekurhuleni.
Ramaphosa said the recent killings had heightened fear among women across South Africa and required government to strengthen its response to the crisis.
“We’re going to even be deploying more money, more resources, more technology to ensure that we deal with fear that women are now subjected to,” Ramaphosa said.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the ANC Veterans League fundraising golf day at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead on Monday, Ramaphosa said government regarded gender-based violence and femicide as a disaster and would intensify efforts to protect women.
“We did say that we regard gender-based violence and femicide as a disaster and at government level we’ve been making many efforts to deal with the problem,” he said.
Ramaphosa said the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide would develop further initiatives to address the crisis.
“Gender-based violence is not only a problem for women, it’s a national crisis and we need to be treating it with exactly that,” he said.
He said government must take responsibility when women are killed, raped or abused.
“Government is there to protect the people of South Africa, plain and simple,” Ramaphosa said.
“So government, when things like these happen, yes, should take responsibility.”
Ramaphosa said women should be able to move around the country without fear and that government must act when they are not safe.
“The women of South Africa deserve to be protected by their government. They deserve to walk in streets at any time of the day and feel safe,” he said.
“And when they don’t feel safe, government must take responsibility, and government must act, it must do something.”
He said government would not make excuses for violence against women.
“The death of women, the raping of women, the abuse of women, is something that we as government must say we are going to take steps to protect the women of our country,” Ramaphosa said.
He also pledged that authorities would intensify efforts to find those responsible for the killings.
“We will be pulling out all stops to find these perpetrators,” he said.
Ramaphosa called on men to respect and honour women, saying GBV was not only a problem affecting women but a national crisis.
“The message must also go to men. Men must continue respecting women, honouring women,” he said.
“The women of our country are the builders of the nation. They carry this nation on their shoulders.”
The comments come as police investigate the deaths of women in Ekurhuleni. Nine bodies have been discovered in the Kempton Park and Ekurhuleni areas over the past two months, while police investigations are continuing.
ANC candidate lists
Ramaphosa also addressed questions about the ANC’s candidate lists for the upcoming local government elections and whether the party should be held accountable for problems with the lists.
In his capacity as ANC president, Ramaphosa said the party must take responsibility for the conduct of its members and ensure accountability.
“On the issue of the lists, the IEC and whether the lists were properly put forward, that matter is ongoing,” Ramaphosa said.
He said the ANC would discuss the matter and determine the way forward.
“The ANC today is going to be discussing the matter more fully to see what the way forward is and, of course, I mean, whenever these things happen, we need to find out why and how it happened and where accountability is required, accountability will be there,” he said.
Ramaphosa said the party was looking into the conduct of its members and that accountability was necessary where required.
“The ANC too must take responsibility, because they are our members,” he said.
“So that too is a given. So, we are in the midst of looking at all those cases.”
