Vermont Secures Season Opening Win Over Ranked Minnesota Duluth
Burlington, Vt. – In a stunning performance, the Vermont women’s hockey team opened their 2026-27 season with a 3-0 victory against the seventh-ranked Minnesota Duluth at Gutterson Fieldhouse. This win marked only the second time in program history that Vermont has achieved a season-opening triumph over a ranked opponent.
Morgann Skoda, Stella Retrum, and Kaylee Lewis each scored, while goaltender Tara Bach accomplished a remarkable feat, recording a total of 36 saves and her first shutout as a Catamount.
Highlights of the Match
The scoring began early, with Vermont taking the lead just 6:23 into the first period. A determined forecheck by Zoe Charland led to a turnover, setting Skoda up for an accurate shot that found the top left corner of the net. This goal not only put Vermont ahead but also marked a significant moment as it was the first time Minnesota Duluth found themselves trailing this season.
As the second period progressed, Vermont aimed to double its advantage. Lewis made a strong offensive push, passing to Lauren O’Hara whose shot rang off the post. However, the Catamounts eventually did extend their lead; with just over three minutes left in the second period, Lewis assisted Linnéa Misner, whose shot was initially saved but quickly rebounded for Retrum to convert, bringing the score to 2-0.
In the closing moments of the game, Vermont capitalized on a power play. With just 2:24 remaining, Misner facilitated a pass to Lewis, who scored with a powerful snapshot into the top left corner, securing a three-goal lead.

Coaches Comments
Head Coach Jim Plumer praised his team’s effort, stating, “That was as a complete a game as we can play. We set the tone right from the start by playing in the offensive zone and getting the first goal. We got contributions up and down the lineup and of course, it all started with Tara Bach being a wall in net. It was a great way to start the season, now we’ve got to regroup and be ready for round two tomorrow.”
