DALLAS – In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, organizations across North Texas are mobilizing efforts to combat the distressingly high rates of domestic violence in Texas.
Understanding Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October serves as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising public consciousness about the pervasive issue of domestic violence. A recently released report titled the Honoring Texas Victims Report, compiled by the Texas Council on Family Violence, highlights the alarming statistics surrounding this critical matter.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the state witnessed approximately 240,000 domestic violence incidents in 2025. Tragically, 160 individuals lost their lives due to intimate partner violence, with Dallas County accounting for 26 of these fatalities and Tarrant County reporting 16.
The Demographics of Domestic Violence
Domestic violence impacts individuals regardless of gender; however, statistics reveal that women endure higher rates of recurring violence and are more likely to sustain severe injuries. Additionally, women of color are disproportionately affected, with many acts of violence going unreported.
Local Initiatives: Genesis Women’s Shelter
In Dallas, the Genesis Women’s Shelter stands as a vital resource for victims of domestic violence. CEO Jan Langbein emphasizes that the focus on Domestic Violence Awareness Month amplifies the need for ongoing awareness, stating, “Every year, the cities across the country recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The governments across the country recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For somebody living in it every month, every day, requires this kind of awareness.”
On October 3, the shelter will host a fundraiser at the Arts District Mansion in Dallas. Langbein notes that many women of color often seek support from their faith communities when facing domestic violence. This event aims to acknowledge the influential role of community leaders in providing assistance.
“They’ll go to pastors, or they’ll go to their first ladies. What we want to do is recognize the influence that first ladies have,” Langbein remarked, highlighting the significance of faith as a source of support for those affected by domestic violence.
