BlackRock and XRP ETFs: Market Dynamics and Future Outlook
BlackRock, known for its significant holdings in Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs), has notably abstained from filing for an XRP ETF. As of September 25, 2026, while seven other firms have collectively raised about $1.77 billion through their spot XRP funds, BlackRock has yet to make a similar move.
Current Landscape of XRP ETFs
XRP, currently trading at approximately $1.50, has seen a decline of about 8% in the past week and is down roughly 59% from its all-time high of $3.65 reached in July 2025. In the U.S. market, the existing seven spot XRP ETFs, managed by companies such as Bitwise, Franklin Templeton, and Canary Capital, hold around 1.18 billion XRP. This accounts for approximately 1.9% of the total XRP supply in circulation.
Since their introduction, these ETFs have garnered about $1.79 billion in investments despite recent withdrawals, leaving approximately $1.77 billion in total assets as of late September. These funds have seen an inflow of around $76 million in just the week preceding this date, indicating a persistent interest from investors.
Why Has BlackRock Not Entered the XRP Market?
Despite the growing interest in XRP funds, BlackRock has not participated in the recent flurry of XRP ETF applications. In September 2025, as other firms updated their submissions to the SEC, BlackRock opted to refrain from filing any ETF applications, raising questions about its strategic focus on this cryptocurrency.
Client Demand Shapes BlackRock’s Decisions
According to Robbie Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock, the launch of new crypto ETFs is driven by five key factors: client demand, market value, liquidity, maturity, and how well the asset integrates into investors’ portfolios. He underscored that client interest is paramount in guiding their products.
Currently, BlackRock is working with Ripple not in the capacity of an XRP ETF, but rather in accepting Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin as collateral for its tokenized Treasury fund, known as BUIDL. This collaboration does not involve XRP directly.
Future Projections for BlackRock and XRP ETFs
Steven McClurg, the CEO of Canary Capital, a competitor in the XRP ETF market, speculated in January 2026 that BlackRock might consider launching an XRP ETF by late 2026 or early 2027, although this timeline remains unconfirmed by BlackRock itself.
Financial Dynamics of XRP ETFs
The total fees generated from existing XRP ETFs is estimated to be around $4.4 million annually, based on an average fee rate of 0.25%. This revenue, shared among the seven issuing firms, reflects a modest financial incentive for new entrants like BlackRock, who typically prefer minimal pricing strategies to attract more investors.
For context, the relatively small financial returns from XRP ETFs may explain BlackRock’s hesitance. Its iShares Bitcoin Trust, despite entering the market later than many competitors, saw considerable success, suggesting that BlackRock may be leaning towards observing market trends before committing to an XRP ETF.
Is an XRP ETF by BlackRock Likely?
At present, the chances of BlackRock launching an XRP ETF seem limited. With the current XRP fund market size being relatively small, combined with BlackRock’s focus on evolving client demand, the firm has refrained from initiating an application. Furthermore, an ETF filing does not automatically translate to XRP purchases, as such funds only acquire coins when there is sufficient investor capital influx.
While the situation remains fluid, a significant increase in total assets within the XRP fund space—beyond the current $1.77 billion—could compel BlackRock to reconsider its stance. The potential for an S-1 filing with the SEC could also mark a turning point in the market.
