FGCU establishes women’s flag football club
LEE COUNTY, Fla. — A significant development is underway in the world of women’s sports as Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) recently announced the establishment of a women’s flag football club. This initiative is part of a broader trend highlighting the increasing popularity of the sport among girls and women across the nation.
Maria Quinn, a women’s flag football officer at FGCU, expresses her enthusiasm for the sport, stating, “It’s honestly just such an amazing sport. I’ve been playing since I was in the third grade.” This sentiment is echoed by Head Coach Wyatt Bare, who notes that flag football is rapidly becoming one of the most popular club sports, not only in Collier County but also nationwide. “Flag football is one of the fastest-growing clubs, not just here in Collier County, but in the country,” Bare asserts.
Highlighting the benefits of the new program, fellow flag football officer Trea Grimmitt shares her joy: “It’s probably my favorite sport I’ve ever played.” The club has emerged in response to the growing enthusiasm for flag football, especially among high school athletes, who previously lacked opportunities at the collegiate level. Grimmitt emphasizes the importance of this development, stating, “The high schools have been doing really well with it, but there haven’t been any collegiate levels here. I think that’ll help a lot, showing that students just like myself can start it.”
Within just two months of its inception, the club has already seen a rise in membership, uniting dozens of young women each week. The excitement surrounding the new team is palpable, as it has officially joined the NIRSA Women’s Flag Football League, marking a significant milestone in its journey.
Veronica Echeveste, another officer for the women’s flag football club, shared her experiences, saying, “I grew up playing different sports, and I’ve never seen such a close sisterhood as I have in flag football. Like, I love my high school team, and I love my college team.” As they prepare to compete against other universities in the near future, the FGCU Eagles are currently savoring every moment spent on the field, from snaps to passes to catches.
