Strategies for Lawyers Entering the Political Arena

For those contemplating a campaign for office, the insights shared in a recent program by the New York State Bar Association’s Women in Law Section can serve as a valuable guide.
Empowering Participation
The program, titled “From Courtrooms to the Campaign Trail: Empowering Women to Enter the Political Arena,” united a panel of political strategists and seasoned politicians who emphasized the critical role of lawyers in civic engagement. Kaelyn Gustafson, chair of the Women in Law Section, articulated a mission to inspire legal professionals of all backgrounds to become involved in their communities.
“This is a timely and vital conversation,” stated Cheryl Kraus, an Albany lawyer and moderator. “Lawyers have always been at the forefront of democratic change. There is a clear demand within our profession for opportunities to influence innovative policy discussions.”
Building a Foundation
Katelyn Galbraith, an attorney involved in campaign operations with Get Out the Vote PAC, emphasized that political engagement should not be limited to election cycles. “Politics is not a once every two years, or once every four years thing. It should be a part of your life,” she noted. Galbraith recommended that aspiring political candidates begin by volunteering on non-profit boards to gain experience and build community trust. She added, “If you don’t have a network right now, go join a campaign of someone you respect.”
New York State Senator Patricia Fahy shared her own journey, highlighting the importance of dedicating time to volunteer efforts before seeking elected office. After years of assisting others, she was encouraged to run her own campaign for the Albany City Assembly, ultimately succeeding in a competitive primary.
The Power of Volunteerism
Scott Karolidis, a panelist and volunteer with the Democratic Socialists of America, reinforced the notion that grassroots involvement can catalyze change. “I was able to make change without a title,” he remarked, encouraging lawyers to engage in challenging tasks such as canvassing to sharpen their political skills and foster community engagement.
Utilizing Legal Expertise
Fahy and campaign manager Elle Bisgaard-Church discussed how lawyers can leverage their understanding of complex legal frameworks to aid policymakers in making informed decisions. “As lawyers, you understand the laws around us,” Bisgaard-Church explained, stressing the dual role lawyers play as citizens and community members.
Ethics in Public Service
The importance of moral integrity in public service was a recurring theme among the panelists. Galbraith emphasized, “There will be times when you have to hold the line and say no. It is your character and fitness on the line. We want folks who can stand up and do the job.”
