Search Efforts Underway for Missing Gulfstream Jet
The U.S. Coast Guard has initiated a search operation for a Gulfstream G100 aircraft that lost communication with air traffic controllers on Saturday morning. The plane, which was en route from Bermuda to Boston, was reportedly transporting six individuals.
Details of the Incident
According to the Coast Guard, both air and surface crews were deployed to look for the aircraft after it failed to arrive at Boston Logan International Airport as scheduled. Clarence Togeretz, the director of flight operations at Latitude Air Ambulance, which operated the jet, confirmed that the aircraft was conducting a medical evacuation mission in Bermuda at the time.
Togeretz expressed concern for the crew’s lack of timely communication, stating, “We always get rather concerned when our crew doesn’t report to us in a timely manner. But I will say that again, optimistically and positively, that doesn’t mean that the worst has happened.”
Coast Guard’s Search Operation
As part of their ongoing efforts, the Coast Guard Northeast District has focused search activities off the coast of Nantucket. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a search-and-rescue notice at 1:20 AM ET on Saturday and is actively working with the Coast Guard and Rescue Coordination Center to locate the missing aircraft.
Audio from the Boston air traffic control tower indicated that controllers had attempted to establish contact with the Gulfstream jet, even asking another aircraft to “attempt contact” on its behalf. It remains unclear if this communication was successful.
Calls for Vigilance
Emergency service audio obtained reveals that vessels in the vicinity have been instructed to maintain a diligent lookout for signs of a potential aircraft in the water. Flightradar24 data confirmed various aircraft participating in the search operations south of Nantucket.
Concerns and Preparedness
Togeretz assured that Latitude Air Ambulance has a robust emergency response plan in place for all operations, emphasizing the organization’s preparedness for unforeseen circumstances.
The Massachusetts Port Authority has released a statement indicating its concern for those aboard the aircraft, asserting that their thoughts are with the passengers and their families as the search continues.
