Weekly Highlights: Big South Women’s Golf Awards for Sept. 24
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Big South Conference has announced its Women’s Golfers of the Week for events held from September 17 to September 23. High Point University’s Makayla Grubb and Francesca Pencelli stood out with impressive performances during the recent Lady Paladin Invitational.
Outstanding Performance by Makayla Grubb
Grubb, hailing from Stafford, Virginia, clinched the title of Women’s Golfer of the Week following her remarkable victory at the Lady Paladin Invitational, which featured a par 72 course measuring 6,335 yards. She achieved an extraordinary score of 14-under par 202 (67-68-67), marking the lowest under-par score recorded in the conference since the commencement of the fall season. Grubb won the tournament by four strokes and set a new milestone by achieving the second-lowest 54-hole score in the history of High Point’s program.
Record-Breaking Statistics
Throughout the tournament, Grubb displayed exceptional skill, leading the 71-player field with a total of 18 birdies, including an impressive five birdies in her last seven holes. Her performance included:
- Ranking first in par-4 scoring at -6.
- Leading in par-5 scoring at -8.
- Tying her collegiate low with rounds of 67 in both the first and final rounds.
- Setting a school record for the lowest 36-hole score at 135.
Her efforts also propelled the Panthers to a commendable runner-up finish in the team standings.
Francesca Pencelli Shines in Her Debut
In her collegiate debut, teammate Francesca Pencelli, originally from Perugia, Italy, showcased her potential and was recognized as the Freshman of the Week. Competing as an individual at the same tournament, Pencelli finished with a score of 10-over par 226 (77-75-74). She recorded five birdies and notably had the sixth-most pars in the field, while achieving the highest number of pars among High Point’s competitors.
Pencelli’s consistent improvement over the rounds culminated in a tie for 43rd place overall, indicating a promising start to her collegiate golfing career.
These honors reflect the strong performance of High Point University golfers, highlighting their skill and determination in the competitive landscape of collegiate golf.
