Game Recap: Oakland Golden Grizzlies vs. Youngstown State

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland Golden Grizzlies faced a narrow defeat against Youngstown State on Thursday, concluding the match with a score of 1-0. Despite generating 13 shots throughout the game, the Grizzlies struggled to convert any of their opportunities into goals, resulting in a shutout.

The match commenced with Oakland displaying a strong offensive approach. Early on, players Mia Tuka, Emma Smith, Ella Shapiro, and Sophie Schultz each took attempts at the YSU goal between 10:04 and 16:11. The Grizzlies earned multiple corner kicks in the first half, notably from 23:01 to 24:39. Isabella Bierod managed to direct a powerful shot on target, but it was thwarted by keeper Kendall Sears in the 26th minute. Youngstown State’s goalkeeper, Norah Schmidt, also made critical saves, ensuring a competitive first half.

As the first half neared its conclusion, Youngstown State seized the opportunity to score the only goal of the match through Baylee Williams, who successfully chipped a shot into the net, giving the Penguins a 1-0 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Golden Grizzlies intensified their efforts, maintaining possession and pressing for an equalizer. They earned another corner kick at 61:45, followed by an attempt on goal by Emma Smith. Nicole Grimaldo also recorded a shot on target as Oakland continued to attack the YSU defense. Schmidt, however, demonstrated her skills again by saving Kamryn Rosa’s shot in the 76th minute.

As time ran down, Oakland pressed hard, with Brae Cole and Lilly Boebel both coming close to leveling the score. Boebel’s attempt in the 88th minute struck the crossbar, leaving the Grizzlies unable to find the back of the net.

Norah Schmidt, the keeper for Youngstown State, played the full match and registered three saves. Leading the Golden Grizzlies in offensive attempts, Emma Smith took three shots, one of which was on goal, while Brae Cole added two shots, including one that was saved.

Next up for the Golden Grizzlies is a home match against Robert Morris University on Sunday, October 4, at 1 PM at the Oakland Soccer Field.
