NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University women’s soccer team faced a tough challenge on Saturday, October 1, as they were narrowly defeated by Albertus Magnus College, with a final score of 2-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Sabine Field.

The Cadets took an early lead in the match, scoring just 7 minutes and 34 seconds into the game. Sophie Guarriello (Barre, Vt.) showcased her talent with a solo run that resulted in the opening goal for Norwich. Her offensive performance was notable, as she led the team with four shots during the contest.

Defensively, Norwich held strong throughout the first half, successfully maintaining their advantage by limiting Albertus Magnus’s opportunities. The Cadets entered halftime with a 1-0 lead, having recorded six shots to Albertus Magnus’ attempts.

However, the dynamic shifted in the second half as Albertus Magnus responded with two goals, seizing the lead. Despite falling behind, Norwich displayed resilience and continued to seek an equalizer, generating multiple chances in the attacking third.

A critical moment came in the final minutes when Amanda Doherty (Slingerlands, N.Y.) nearly leveled the match with a header that was saved in the bottom right corner. Unfortunately for the Cadets, they were unable to create further scoring opportunities, and the match concluded without a comeback.

In total, Norwich managed nine shots throughout the game, with contributions from several players. In addition to Guarriello’s four attempts, Colby Magoon (Loudon, N.H.) made notable efforts, contributing two shots, while Doherty, Emma Korrow (Northfield, Vt.), and Jasmine Hackman (Clear Brook, Va.) each added one shot to the tally.

Gracie Dempsey (Alexandria, Va.) played a crucial role in goal, recording six saves during her second start of the year. Her efforts were significant in keeping Norwich within reach of an equalizing goal, even as Albertus Magnus outshot them 17 to 9.

Following this match, Norwich’s record stands at 5-4-1 overall, with a 2-4-1 mark in GNAC competition. The Cadets will look to rebound in their upcoming game against Wentworth Institute of Technology, scheduled for Thursday, October 8, at 6 PM.
