Understanding Women’s Health Investment Challenges: Insights from LYMA’s P.O.W.E.R. Index

Health Priorities vs. Financial Commitment

A recent analysis by LYMA, in collaboration with The Future Laboratory, indicates a significant disparity between women’s prioritization of health and their willingness to financially invest in it. The P.O.W.E.R. Index report highlights that nearly 75% of women aged 35 to 54 view health as their most important concern. However, only 18% of these individuals consider health spending as the best use of their money, with merely a third categorizing it as an “investment.”

Bridging the Gap: Conversations with Lucy Goff

In an episode of The Beauty Authority, LYMA founder Lucy Goff discussed this paradox, emphasizing that many women often prioritize family and work, leading to neglect of their own health. She believes that addressing this issue requires a change in dialogue surrounding women’s health expenditures.

Challenges in Identifying Science-Based Products

The report reveals another critical concern: 56% of surveyed women reported difficulty in distinguishing between products supported by genuine scientific evidence and those that simply utilize scientific terminology. Notably, older women (86% of those over 55) expressed that clinical validation is more important than brand reputation when evaluating wellness products.

Goff advocates for brands to clarify the scientific backing of their products, stating, “If you are selling a moisturizer, speak about the clinical proof of your products as a moisturizer. Don’t market it as a longevity cream.”

Weariness with ‘Longevity’ Marketing

Another key finding indicates that 57% of women are fatigued by the frequent use of the term “longevity.” Goff argues for a more precise application of this term in marketing, advocating for evidence-based claims rather than generalized appeals. Additionally, 80% of women stated they always review ingredients before purchasing, demonstrating a desire for transparency in the beauty and wellness industry.

Connections Between Skin Health and Overall Wellness

The report expands the view of women’s health by linking aspects like hormonal balance, stress management, sleep quality, and skin health. This comprehensive approach underscores the interrelatedness of these factors, highlighting that changes in skin often reflect broader health issues.

Goff reflects on the visibility of skin health as a barometer for overall well-being, noting, “It’s the only organ that you can see that ages.”

What Women Desire from Health Investments

The report shows that women’s health investments are not merely about aesthetics. A substantial 72% prefer treatments that enhance their self-perception over those that alter how others perceive them. Moreover, 37% prioritize financial security over physical appearance in the next five years, indicating an understanding of long-term value that they often do not apply to health.

Furthermore, 67% of women expressed that they value the confidence from being in good health more than from their appearance. This shift suggests an evolution in how women view health, beauty, and aging.

Introducing the P.O.W.E.R. Index

The P.O.W.E.R. Index presents a five-part framework designed to help women assess health or wellness purchases:

  • P: Proven – Is there credible science supporting the product?
  • O: Outcomes – Does it provide meaningful results?
  • W: Whole-System – Does it consider the interconnected nature of women’s health?
  • E: Empowering – Does it leave consumers more informed?
  • R: Return – Does it offer lasting value?

Goff envisions that implementing this analytical approach will promote greater transparency within the beauty and wellness sectors.

Looking Ahead in Women’s Health Conversations

For consumers, Goff encourages a mindset shift, urging individuals to ask, “What has this actually been proven to do?” before making health-related purchases. The full conversation with Lucy Goff can be found in the latest episode of The Beauty Authority.
