The Journey of Joni Lunceford: From Veterinary Care to Breast Cancer Diagnosis
A Passion for Animal Health
Joni Lunceford works diligently as a nuclear medicine technologist at the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center, where she plays a vital role in assessing animal health. Her responsibilities include diagnosing various ailments in pets, such as broken bones and cancers, through advanced imaging techniques.
Since childhood, Joni has had an enduring love for animals. “Helping people and their pets is my dream job,” she said. Her commitment to animal care is evident in every pet CT and bone scan she performs.
Prioritizing Personal Health
In addition to her professional dedication, Joni takes her own health seriously. Following a discussion with her primary care provider at MU Health Care, she began annual mammograms in 2020 due to her increased risk factors for breast cancer, which include family history and dense breast tissue.
To monitor her health closely, Joni alternated between mammograms and breast MRIs every six months, all of which returned negative results up until March 2026. It was during this period that she received an unexpected referral to the High-Risk Breast Clinic at MU Health Care.
A Pivotal Appointment
Initially unaware of the clinic’s existence, Joni decided to schedule an appointment upon receiving the referral call. During her visit, she met with Tiffany Carmichael, a nurse practitioner specializing in breast cancer screening and prevention.
“Joni and I talked about what it means to be high risk and what other things she could think about doing,” Tiffany explained. Although Joni’s risk assessment indicated that her chances of developing breast cancer were slightly above 20%, Tiffany emphasized the importance of addressing these risks seriously.
Receiving the Diagnosis
The visit took a sudden turn when Tiffany conducted a clinical breast exam and discovered a lump on Joni’s right side. Subsequent testing confirmed that Joni had developed Stage 1 breast cancer.
Reflecting on the moment, Joni remarked, “I had no reason to think that anything was wrong. And that one day, one moment changed my life.”
