Apple is set to unveil a range of new home products on October 13, which will be accompanied by a new operating system expected to be named ‘homeOS.’ Here’s everything we know so far.
New ‘HomePad’ and the Launch of homeOS

The highly anticipated ‘HomePad,’ Apple’s new smart home hub, is expected to be launched on October 13. According to Mark Gurman, this device will be powered by a new operating system, tentatively dubbed ‘homeOS.’
Recent reports from Bloomberg provide insight into the features of homeOS, which will include:
- Widgets similar to those on the iPhone
- User interface designs inspired by the iPad
- Icons styled like those used on the Apple Watch
The default user interface is designed around photo slideshows and clock displays, akin to the new StandBy Mode anticipated on the upcoming iPhone Duo. Users will be able to swipe up from the clock or photos to access the app launcher.
Siri AI at the Core of homeOS Interaction

Siri AI will be the central method of interaction within homeOS. As discussed by Gurman in his podcast, the operating system is designed with the premise of making Siri not just an app, but a full-fledged operating system. He stated:
“The new operating system is basically, what would an OS look like if Siri AI had an OS? If Siri AI was not just an app on the phone, if it wasn’t just an interface on the phone. What if it was an operating system?…It’s all about this concept of personal search and personal context, being able to ask for songs, podcasts, notes, calendar items, photos that are bespoke to you.”
In addition to voice interaction, homeOS will support touch input. Users will be able to access built-in apps like Music, Podcasts, Photos, Weather, FaceTime, Notes, Calendar, Messages, and Reminders. While there is no indication of an App Store for homeOS, users will be permitted to bring widgets from iPhones.
As seen in existing HomePod designs, the primary interaction with homeOS will occur through Siri.
