Keighley Women Sentenced for Violent Assault
In a disturbing case at Bradford Crown Court, two women have been sentenced for their roles in a violent attack that left a victim fearing for her life.
The Incident
The court heard from prosecutor Clare Walsh that the complainant had sought refuge after hearing threats regarding her safety from Joanne Sinfield, 46. Tensions escalated when accusations emerged concerning Sinfield’s benefits money, prompting the victim and her partner to live in a campervan.
In July of this year, Sinfield, accompanied by 36-year-old Amy Shackleton, confronted the victim at the campervan. Witnesses reported hearing Sinfield demand, “where’s my money?” As the complainant attempted to escape, she was forcibly restrained by Shackleton and struck repeatedly from behind.
Details of the Attack
According to reports, the complainant experienced a brutal assault where she was struck between ten and twenty times. In a desperate attempt to protect herself, she curled up on the ground. A passing van driver witnessed the assault, stating he saw two women attacking the victim, who was allegedly wielding metal bars. The aggressors fled after the complainant shouted for help.
The victim sustained serious injuries, including damage to her head and a finger, and required hospitalization for her injuries.
The Defendants
Both Sinfield and Shackleton have significant criminal histories. In September, they pled guilty to charges of unlawful wounding and possession of an offensive weapon. Each was sentenced to 22 months in prison by Recorder Leila Benyounes, who noted the victim’s description of terror during the incident.
Legal Representation
Joanne Shepherd, representing Sinfield, expressed that her client felt genuine remorse and was making positive changes while on remand. She highlighted Sinfield’s commitment to rehabilitation, noting that she is engaging in a drug-free program.
Catherine Silverton, representing Shackleton, argued for a reconsideration of the sentence, pointing out that her client had been remanded for four months. She clarified that Shackleton had used a spanner rather than a bar during the incident and emphasized her feelings of regret.
Conclusion
This case highlights serious issues regarding violence and safety within the community. The prompt action of bystanders and legal authorities may help in addressing such troubling incidents. Both defendants will serve their sentences as part of the court’s effort to ensure justice for the victim.
