MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A man from Baldwin County faces charges of voyeurism following an incident involving a hidden camera in a restroom.
Law enforcement officials with Gulf Shores Police report that Brendan Smith set up the camera beneath a sink in the Hangout Hospitality Group’s warehouse. Detective Carl Wittstruck emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating, “It’s a huge invasion of somebody’s privacy. Obviously, people were in the restroom. There’s an expectation of privacy.”
According to court documents, the events took place in April. Smith was recorded positioning the camera, ensuring it was properly aimed before it was discovered. Concerns arose when a female employee noticed the camera and began reviewing the footage, which revealed videos of herself and another colleague.
“She took the camera, and she was able to rewind the video which showed herself going into the bathroom,” Wittstruck remarked. The employee also captured video evidence using her phone and brought it to the attention of the management.
“This incident occurred at an off-site warehouse location involving warehouse personnel only. The GoPro device was discovered before any inappropriate content was recorded. This person is no longer employed by Hangout Hospitality Group. To be clear, this incident did not take place at the Hangout restaurant.”
Smith has been granted a bond set at $15,000.
