Sony Unveils New AI Upscaling Technology for Standard PS5
Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced the launch of an innovative AI upscaling solution for the standard PlayStation 5, named Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR). This technology is expected to enhance gaming visuals and performance, marking a significant development stemming from the collaboration between Sony’s Project Amethyst and AMD.
Comparative Performance with Existing Technologies
While the recently developed PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) featured on the PS5 Pro is touted as the “gold standard” in AI upscaling, early insights from Digital Foundry indicate that QSSR may not meet the same performance level. Specifically, due to the lack of dedicated machine learning hardware in the standard PS5, users can expect QSSR to primarily deliver upscaled graphics closer to a 1440p resolution rather than reaching the 4K upscaling capabilities seen on the Pro model.
According to Daniel Craig, a principal graphics research and development engineer for Sony, “On PS5 Pro, developers almost uniformly output to 4K and adjust render resolution beneath it. On PS5, teams have to be more flexible, tuning not just render resolution, but also their intermediate and final presentation targets depending on the graphics mode.”
Implementation and Accessibility for Developers
One of the key advantages of QSSR is its compatibility as a “drop-in replacement” for titles that already utilize PSSR, requiring only minimal adjustments for developers. Sony has expressed its commitment to making this technology widely available, aiming to encourage developers to optimize their games using QSSR.
Initial Games Utilizing Quick Spectral Super Resolution
The first games that will showcase the potential of QSSR include Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both of which are receiving updates today to incorporate this new graphics option for standard PS5 users. Notably, the Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition will also be launching simultaneously.
Future Prospects of QSSR Technology
Digital Foundry remarked on the significant possibilities that QSSR may offer, stating, “the potential here is remarkable: low resolution and poor upscaling have impacted so many titles in this generation, but QSSR could make a big difference.” This assertion underlines the technology’s potential to enhance gaming experiences significantly moving forward.
Conclusion
Sony’s introduction of QSSR marks an important step in optimizing gaming experiences on the PlayStation 5. With the promise of improved graphics in upcoming titles, players can look forward to a richer visual experience as developers start to implement this technology in their games.
