ITA Carolina Regionals Qualifying Matches Roundup

In an exhilarating day of tennis at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Helen Sarikulaya and Alexis Nyborg secured their spots in the main singles draw of the ITA Carolina Regionals by each winning two qualifying matches on Thursday.

Sarikulaya’s Path to the Main Draw

Sarikulaya opened her day with a commendable victory over East Carolina’s Reese Calvo, winning the match 6-3, 7-6 (7), which set the tone for her performance. In her subsequent match against Charlotte’s Yelyzaveta Chainykova, Sarikulaya faced a more challenging contest but clinched a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 victory, thus advancing to the main draw.

Nyborg Continues Strong Performance

Demonstrating exceptional form, Nyborg maintained her perfect fall season record by achieving two wins on Thursday, bringing her singles record to an impressive 8-0. She first defeated Charlotte’s Andrea Chacon with a score of 6-3, 6-2, followed by a victory over North Carolina’s Mary Grace Rennard, 7-5, 6-2. Remarkably, Nyborg has lost just one set across her 17 sets this fall.

Other Competitors Shine

While Cornelia Kack and Madison Cordisco also advanced to the final round of qualifying singles, both faced defeats in their subsequent matches. Cordisco initially won against Davidson’s Olivia Hooper, 6-0, 6-4, while Kack triumphed over Aida Maria Mitrache of Coastal Carolina, 6-1, 6-2. However, both players were eliminated in their next matchups.

Successes in the Consolation Draw

In the consolation singles draw, Elon’s Nathalie Marinovitch, Lisa Kranec, and Mariana Reding each recorded straight-set victories, showcasing their resilience and skill.

Upcoming Matches

Main draw singles action is set to commence this Friday, where Nyborg and Sarikulaya will join teammate Simone Bergeron in the tournament bracket. Additionally, doubles play will begin, featuring four pairings from Elon competing in the event.
