Solveig Løvseth Wins 2025 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona

KONA, Hawai`i (October 11, 2025) — In a thrilling display of endurance, Solveig Løvseth from Norway secured the title of 2025 IRONMAN World Champion. Løvseth completed the demanding race with a remarkable time of 8:28:27.

Race Overview

The race unfolded in the challenging climate of Kailua-Kona, where both heat and humidity tested the athletes. Løvseth, participating in the IRONMAN World Championship for the first time, overcame significant competition, with Great Britain’s Kat Matthews finishing second and defending champion Laura Philipp of Germany taking third place.

Key Highlights

  • Winner: Solveig Løvseth (NOR) – 8:28:27
  • Second Place: Kat Matthews (GBR)
  • Third Place: Laura Philipp (DEU)

As a testament to her performance, Løvseth earned a prize of $125,000 USD and added 6,000 points to her tally in the IRONMAN Pro Series.

Løvseth’s Journey

“It has been hard to wrap my head around it,” said Løvseth after her win. “I didn’t have the best swim but felt like I kept my calm… I genuinely didn’t know if I was going to be able to get to the finish line.”

Despite her initial concerns, Løvseth maintained her composure and strategized effectively throughout the race. With halfway time breathing new hope into her run, she managed to close in on her competitors, eventually taking the lead.

Race Dynamics

The competition commenced with the ROKA swim, where Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR) took an early lead, marking a strong performance with a swim time of 49:29. However, a formidable chase group, including past champions and strong athletes like Chelsea Sodaro (USA), began closing the gap on the bike course.

Notably, Taylor Knibb (USA) executed a strategic move to take the lead during the bike portion but faced challenges during the marathon phase, ultimately leading to her retirement from the race.

Finishing Positions

Place Name (Country) Swim Bike Run Total Time
1st Solveig Løvseth (NOR) 55:40 4:31:53 2:55:47 8:28:27
2nd Kat Matthews (GBR) 55:43 4:40:08 2:47:23 8:29:02
3rd Laura Philipp (DEU) 55:50 4:40:26 2:55:53 8:37:28

Noteworthy Accomplishments

Løvseth’s victory marks a significant milestone as she becomes the fourth Norwegian triathlete to win the championship on their first attempt. Furthermore, this year’s outcomes continue the trend of Norwegian athletes dominating the championships, following the achievements of others in previous years.

Looking Ahead: IRONMAN Pro Series

The next event on the horizon is the 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Marbella, Spain. With significant points on offer, Løvseth and Matthews are set to battle for the title in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the series.

As both athletes vie for points in the IRONMAN Pro Series, Løvseth is currently positioned second, trail behind Matthews, who leads with a notable point margin.
