As the anticipation builds for the start of the 2025 college volleyball season, it’s time to dive into the preseason rankings. While predictions can be precarious—especially with a swirling transfer market—this evaluation aims to showcase the strongest teams heading into the season. Let’s explore the top ten contenders for the upcoming year.

1. Nebraska

Nebraska currently holds the number one spot in these preseason rankings. The team boasts a robust roster under the leadership of coach Dani Busboom Kelly. Notably, the Huskers retained every player from last season, including standout talents like Harper Murray, Andi Jackson, and Rebekah Allick. With a strong backcourt and promising freshmen, Nebraska aims to capitalize on their impressive depth.

2. Penn State

Close behind is Penn State at number two. Although the Nittany Lions lost key players Jess Mruzik and Taylor Trammell, they’ve added Kennedy Martin, a high-caliber recruit, to bolster their lineup. Supported by skilled setter Izzy Starck and returning players Gillian Grimes and Caroline Jurevicius, their potential remains substantial.

3. Texas

Texas ranks third, showcasing a formidable roster filled with newly acquired talent, including transfers Torrey Stafford, Ramsey Gary, and Ana Kujundzic. Stafford, a proven outside hitter, leads a strong offense complemented by an improved backcourt, making the Longhorns a serious contender this season.

4. Pittsburgh

Pitt secures the fourth position, spurred by the return of national player of the year Olivia Babcock. Despite the departure of notable players like Rachel Fairbanks and Emmy Klika, Pitt has made strategic portal moves to balance their roster. In addition to Babcock, Bre Kelley and Ryla Jones are expected to play critical roles this season.

5. Wisconsin

Wisconsin is positioned at fifth place, facing the challenge of replacing star player Sarah Franklin. Nevertheless, they look forward to seeing Charlie Fuerbringer elevate her game, especially with the addition of offensive powerhouse Mimi Colyer and the anticipated development of Carter Booth.

6. Kentucky

Kentucky Volleyball

Ranked sixth, Kentucky boasts a formidable outside hitting duo with Eva Hudson and Brooklyn DeLeye. Their chemistry and skill will be crucial as the Wildcats aim to make a deeper impact this season.

7. Stanford

Stanford comes in at seventh, facing a significant loss with Kami Miner’s departure. However, key players like Elia Rubin, Ipar Kurt, and Jordyn Harvey return to stabilize the squad. Watch for incoming freshman Logan Parks, who has the potential to make an immediate impact.

8. Louisville

Louisville, designated eighth, sees a noteworthy decline following last year’s national championship appearance. The Cardinals will feel the absence of Anna DeBeer, Charitie Luper, and others, including their head coach. Nonetheless, Nayelis Cabello remains, alongside newcomer Chloe Chicoine, as they work to rebuild their roster.

9. Texas A&M

Texas A&M Volleyball

Texas A&M, positioned at ninth, is set to make waves this season. Following impressive playoff performances, including an upset of Arizona State, they return key players like Logan Lednicky and Ifenna Cos Okpalla.

10. UCLA

Lastly, UCLA rounds out the top ten. The Bruins have made significant strides in recruitment, adding prominent transfers such as Maggie Li and Phekran Kong. This fresh lineup, led by an experienced coach, presents substantial potential, albeit with a level of uncertainty.

First Team Out

SMU is recognized as the first team outside the top ten. Their impressive recruitment, particularly with standout Averi Carlson, positions them to watch closely as the season unfolds.
