Hezly Rivera Shines at U.S. Gymnastics Championships
New Orleans hosted the U.S. Gymnastics Championships this past weekend, showcasing remarkable performances by athletes gearing up for the upcoming World Championships. Hezly Rivera, a prominent figure in women’s gymnastics, transitioned from rookie to veteran in just one year by clinching gold medals in multiple disciplines.
Dominant Performance by Rivera
Rivera delivered an outstanding performance over two days, executing eight hit routines and securing gold in the all-around, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercises. Her achievement is particularly notable given her journey from the recent Olympics, where she had to overcome the mental and physical challenges of returning to elite competition.
“It means the world to me to take this national championship title home because I worked so hard for this,” Rivera shared with NBC. “It was not easy coming back after the Olympics. I took some time off, so much work in the gym, hard work, blood, sweat, tears, so I’m just so grateful that I’m here today.”
Podium Finishers
Leanne Wong, an alternate at the Olympics, demonstrated her proficiency by taking home the silver medal in the all-around and achieving gold on vault. Meanwhile, Joscelyn Roberson also secured a spot on the podium, finishing third in the all-around and silver on floor.
Shifts in Team Dynamics
The championship weekend indicated a shift in the gymnastics landscape. Many of Rivera’s Olympic teammates, including iconic gymnasts Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee, were notably absent from the competition, as both have stepped away from elite gymnastics. Other athletes, such as Jordan Chiles and Jade Carey, are focusing on collegiate competitions instead of returning to the elite scene just yet. This leaves the upcoming World Championships roster potentially open for new talents to emerge.
Men’s Championship Highlights
In parallel, the men’s gymnastics competition saw the selection of a strong World Championships team, led by 2024 Olympian Asher Hong. He earned gold on vault, floor, and rings, while also capturing silver on parallel bars. Remarkably, he won the all-around title with an impressive margin of nearly eight points, the largest in U.S. Championships history.
“I’m just grateful that all the training paid off,” Hong stated. “It was a hard grind these past five weeks, I had a lot of hard trainings, but, you know, I came here with confidence. One of our mottos is ‘leave no doubt,’ and that’s what I wanted to do here today.”
Team Selections and Future Prospects
Hong will be joined by fellow Olympians such as Brody Malone and Taylor Burkhart, who also excelled in individual events. Notably, Frederick Richard, another Olympic contender, was left off the roster despite a strong second-place finish in the all-around. The focus on individual performances rather than team events at the upcoming World Championships enhances the competitive field.
The women’s team selection will be based on a combination of performances through the season, making Rivera and Wong’s strong showings crucial as the gymnastics community anticipates the final roster decisions.
Return of Skye Blakely
A noteworthy returnee is Skye Blakely, who had to withdraw from the Olympic Trials due to an Achilles injury. Competing for the University of Florida, Blakely marked her return to elite gymnastics with a tie for first with Rivera on bars and secured second place on beam, displaying her readiness for future competitions.
Looking Ahead
As the gymnastics community gears up for the World Championships, the outcomes of the U.S. Gymnastics Championships will significantly influence the composition of the teams. With a blend of veterans and emerging athletes, the future of U.S. gymnastics appears promising.
