Granville Biomedical: Advancing Women’s Health Education Globally
A Newfoundland and Labrador-based company, Granville Biomedical, is making significant strides in enhancing women’s health care through innovative educational tools. Since its inception in 2019, the company has expanded its reach to 28 countries, developing products that prioritize anatomical accuracy and educational efficacy.
Founders and Mission
Granville Biomedical was co-founded by Christine Goudie and Crystal Northcott, both of whom identified critical gaps in women’s health care during a Team Broken Earth trip in 2018. Their discussions on the disparities in health education inspired them to create a suite of products tailored specifically to women’s health needs.
“We wanted to make the best possible type of product that represents the human body as accurately as possible,” Goudie explained in an interview with CBC’s St. John’s Morning Show. This commitment to authenticity led to the development of anatomically accurate pelvic models useful for both physician training and patient education.
Innovative Product Offerings
The company’s product line includes a variety of training tools, such as:
- Pelvic exam models
- Suturing training kits
- Educational kits for IUD insertion, pessary use, and menstrual product demonstrations
These models are designed to facilitate clear communication between healthcare professionals and patients, empowering women to make informed decisions about their health.
Expansion and Technological Integration
With support from various funding sources, including Mitacs and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Granville Biomedical has successfully grown its research capabilities and product offerings. They recently began exploration into digital technologies, including an upcoming app and sensor-based innovations aimed at enhancing the functionality of its products.
Goudie noted, “We’re looking at how to implement sensor technology into our products so the palpation can be measured and accurately analyzed.” This advancement aims to further enrich the training experience for healthcare practitioners, ensuring they have access to the most realistic training scenarios.
Global Reach and Future Prospects
Initially expanding into the United States, Granville Biomedical has broadened its distribution network to five continents, including markets in Australia—an area particularly receptive due to increased funding devoted to women’s health initiatives.
Despite the small scale of their operations just yet, both Goudie and Northcott express their commitment to continuously contribute to women’s health education in meaningful ways. “Crystal and I are just happy to continue contributing in whatever kind of small way we can,” Goudie stated.
All products manufactured by Granville Biomedical are proudly made in Canada, underscoring the company’s commitment to quality and local craftsmanship.
