Acknowledgment of Coaching Excellence
Former head coach of the Macalester College swimming and diving teams, Bob Pearson, has been recognized as one of the esteemed inductees into the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Hall of Fame Class of 2026. This prestigious induction will take place at the CSCAA Annual Awards Celebration, set for May 3, 2026, in Chicago.
Coaching Tenure and Achievements
Pearson dedicated 22 seasons to leading both the men’s and women’s swim and dive programs at Macalester. His coaching tenure was marked by remarkable achievements, including:
- 168 school records set by his athletes
- 69 All-MIAC performances
- 21 All-America citations
In recognition of his accomplishments, Pearson received the MIAC Coach of the Year award four times for the women’s team and once for the men’s. He coached several notable athletes, including Macalester Hall of Famers such as Adam Burke (’92), Sarah Smith (’92), Karin Halvorson (’01), and Heather Lendway (’06).
Contributions Beyond Coaching
Pearson’s impact on swimming extends beyond coaching; he has been an active contributor to the sport through various organizational roles. His notable positions include:
- Board of Directors member for the CSCAA
- Member and Chair of the NCAA Swimming & Diving Rules Committee (2005-2007)
- Chair of USA Swimming’s Safety Education Committee (2001-2003)
- Longtime member of the Minnesota Swimming Board of Directors
In 2006, he was honored with the CSCAA’s Richard E. Steadman Award, which celebrates coaches who have significantly spread joy within the sport.
Pearson’s Background
Originally from Anoka, Minnesota, Pearson attended Hamline University, where he excelled as an All-MIAC swimmer, graduating in 1985. He furthered his education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Athletic Administration from St. Thomas University.
