Aitana Bonmati’s Recovery Progress Ahead of Euro 2025 Opener
Positive Steps Towards Recovery
Spain’s women’s national team coach, Montse Tome, shared encouraging updates on Aitana Bonmati’s health as the team gears up for their opening match against Portugal in the Women’s European Championship. Bonmati, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner, has recently rejoined her teammates after being discharged from the hospital following a case of viral meningitis.
Training Updates
In a press conference on Wednesday, Tome emphasized that while Bonmati is showing positive signs in her recovery, health remains the top priority. “You saw a bit of the training, I think about 15 minutes, but she was working completely separately,” Tome noted. “Her progress is very positive,” she added, indicating that Bonmati is eager to participate, though the coaching staff is being mindful of her health.
Bonmati was unable to take part in Spain’s recent 3-1 victory over Japan, raising questions about her readiness for the match against Portugal, scheduled for Thursday in Zurich.
Team Morale Boost
Midfielder Patricia Guijarro remarked on the uplifting effect Bonmati’s return has had on the squad. “She’s euphoric, happy, and of course, we’ll see her tomorrow and give her a big hug. Above all, she’s happy to be here,” said Guijarro, reflecting the team’s excitement about having their key player back.
Spain’s Euro 2025 Outlook
As the defending World Cup champions, Spain is considered one of the top contenders for the Euro 2025 title. Bonmati, who has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for her country, played a crucial role in their historic World Cup victory in 2023.
