Katelyn Young Returns to Murray State as Assistant Coach for 2025-26 Season

Murray, KY — The Murray State women’s basketball program is thrilled to announce the return of Katelyn Young as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Young holds the record as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder for the Racers.

A Stellar Playing Career

Young completed her collegiate playing career during a remarkable 2024-25 season, finishing with impressive statistics. As a Racers player, she accumulated a total of 3,029 points, making her the 14th highest scorer in NCAA Division I history. Additionally, Young is among a select group in Murray State lore who achieved over 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds, joining the prestigious ranks alongside Popeye Jones.

Professional Success in Australia

After her successful tenure at Murray State, Young took her talents to Australia, where she played for the Knox Raiders in the NBL1. There, she contributed significantly to the team’s success, culminating in winning the NBL National Championship. In the final match, Young scored 10 points and secured six rebounds, showcasing her abilities on an international stage.

Coaching Expectations and Vision

Rechelle Turner, head coach of the Murray State women’s basketball team, expressed her enthusiasm about Young’s return, stating, “We are beyond excited to welcome back one of the greatest players in our program’s history. Having our all-time leading scorer, whose jersey hangs in the rafters and who has excelled at the professional level, return as an assistant coach to mentor and develop our post players is truly special.”

Legacy and Future Impact

During her time at Murray State, Young earned recognition as a five-time all-conference performer. Her career averages of 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game were instrumental in leading the Racers to both the Missouri Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships in her final season. The program now looks forward to benefiting from her wealth of experience as she transitions from player to coach.

Conclusion

Katelyn Young’s return to Murray State presents a promising opportunity for the women’s basketball team. With her rich history of success both as a player and now as a coach, she is poised to make a significant impact on the program’s future.
