Springbok Women Triumph Over Spain in WXV Global Series

Match Overview

In a compelling encounter at La Cartuja, the Springbok Women showcased their skill and determination, defeating Spain with a final score of 20-0. The match attracted over 2,000 fans, who witnessed a tightly contested battle, particularly in the first quarter.

Key Moments of the Match

First Half Highlights

The opening stages of the match saw both teams engaged in a tactical contest, with neither side able to break the deadlock until midway through the first half. Catha Jacobs finally opened the scoring for South Africa following a sustained period of pressure, successfully crossing the try line after several phases of play. Jakkie Cilliers successfully converted the try, putting the Springbok Women ahead.

Despite a setback with Babalwa Latsha departing due to an ankle injury, South Africa maintained their offensive momentum, but Spain’s Claudia Peña came close to levelling the score. Peña, however, was halted just short of the try line, and moments later, South Africa capitalized on the situation with another three points from Cilliers.

Injury Woes for Spain

Adding to Spain’s challenges, Peña was also taken off the field due to injury shortly before halftime. Nevertheless, the Spanish side pressed on, attempting to exploit gaps in South Africa’s defense. However, they were unable to convert these opportunities into points.

Second Half Dynamics

Upon resumption, the Springbok Women displayed a more dominant presence. Their scrummaging and phase play continuously pressured the Spanish defense. Aseza Hele further extended South Africa’s lead, amassing their second try of the match.

Spain fought hard to respond, pushing forward and occasionally finding potential openings, yet they were unable to breach the Springbok defense again throughout the match.

Final Minutes and Conclusion

The closing minutes of the game saw South Africa pressing their advantage with a third try scored by Jakkie Cilliers, who finished off a well-executed team maneuver. Although the conversion was missed, the Springbok Women led comfortably at 20-0.

Despite their best efforts to secure a consolation try, Spain’s endeavors were thwarted by South Africa’s steadfast defense. As the final whistle blew, the Springbok Women celebrated their well-earned victory in what marked their second win of the 2026 WXV Global Series.

Recognition

After the match, Vainah Ubisi was named Player of the Match for her impressive performance, contributing significantly to the team’s powerful set-piece execution.
