Women’s ODI World Cup 2023: Prize Pool Increased Significantly
The 2023 Women’s ODI World Cup is set to make history with a record-breaking prize pool of A$21 million (US$13.88 million). This substantial increase marks a pivotal moment in women’s cricket, as it not only exceeds the previous tournament’s earnings but also surpasses the most recent men’s event.
Record Prize Pool for Women’s Cricket
The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently announced that this year’s tournament, hosted in India and Sri Lanka, will feature a prize pool nearly quadrupled from the A$5.3 million (US$3.5 million) awarded in 2022. With such a leap in financial incentives, the ICC is demonstrating a strong commitment to fostering the growth of women’s cricket.
Distribution of Prize Money
The winners of the final, scheduled for November 2 in Mumbai, will receive an impressive A$6.9 million (US$4.48 million). This amount is more than double the A$1.5 million (US$1.32 million) awarded to the Australian team for their victory in 2022. Here’s a breakdown of the prize money distribution:
- Winners: US$4.48 million (A$6.9 million)
- Runners-Up: US$2.4 million (A$3.4 million)
- Semi-Finalists: US$1.12 million (A$1.7 million) each
- Group Stage Participants: Guaranteed US$250,000 (A$382,000)
- Wins in Group Stage: US$34,314 (A$52,494) for each win
- Fifth and Sixth Places: US$700,000 (A$1.07 million) each
- Seventh and Eighth Places: US$280,000 (A$428,000) each
A Historic Commitment to Women’s Cricket
ICC Chairman Jay Shah emphasized this significant increase, stating, “This four-fold increase in prize money is a landmark moment for women’s cricket and reflects our clear commitment to its long-term growth.”
