Women’s World Cup: Round 1 and Tiebreak Protocols
This year’s Women’s World Cup is diverging from tradition, as it does not coincide with the upcoming FIDE World Cup set for November 2025.
With a substantial prize pool totaling $691,250, of which $50,000 is earmarked for the champion, the stakes are indeed high. Not only that, but the tournament also offers three coveted spots for the FIDE Women’s Candidates Tournament, scheduled for the first half of 2026.
Tournament Format
This knockout-style event consists of seven rounds. Each round includes two classical matches, followed by tiebreak procedures if the results are tied.
Classical Game Format
Each classical game is played under the following time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by an additional 30 minutes for the remainder of the game. An increment of 30 seconds is granted for every move after the first.
Tiebreak Procedures
Should the score remain tied after the classical games, the tiebreak process is as follows:
- Immediately following a color draw after Game 2, two tiebreak games will commence with each player having 15 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move.
- If still tied, another drawing of colors will lead to two additional games with each player set at 10 minutes and a 10-second increment.
- Should the tie persist, two more games featuring 5 minutes and a 3-second increment will be played after another color draw.
- If the score remains level, two games with a 3-minute time control and a 2-second increment will follow, again after a color draw.
- Finally, if still tied, the same scenario will replay with reversed colors until one player secures a victory.
Live Coverage and Expert Commentary
Fans can look forward to expert commentary from notable figures such as GM Valeriane Gaprindashvili, WGM Almira Skripchenko from round 2 onward, and WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili during round one.
Conclusion
The Women’s World Cup presents a unique opportunity for competitors not only to vie for significant financial rewards but also to position themselves for future championship opportunities. With rigorous tiebreaking procedures in place, the tournament promises to deliver exciting and closely contested matches.
