Tufts University Women’s Track and Field Shines at M.I.T. Final Qualifier
CAMBRIDGE, MA (May 15, 2025) – The Tufts University women’s track and field team delivered an impressive performance at the M.I.T. Final Qualifier, setting the stage for a strong showing at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships.
Record-Breaking Javelin Performance
Jackie Wells showcased her athletic prowess by breaking the Tufts program record in the javelin throw, with a career best distance of 42.41 meters (139 feet 1 inch). This remarkable achievement not only set a new record by more than nine inches but also secured her first place in a competitive field that included athletes from Division I, II, and III programs.
Strong Sprint Performances
Makayla Moriarty turned heads in the 200-meter dash, finishing fifth with a new personal best of 24.95 seconds. This mark placed her among the top performers in NCAA Division III, just three-tenths of a second shy of the Tufts program record.
Notable Hurdling Efforts
Arielle Chechile made her mark by achieving the third-best time in Tufts history in the 400-meter hurdles. Her personal best of 1:00.64 landed her in third place, just slightly off the program record.
High Jump Glory
Harper Meek capped her career with the Jumbos by winning the high jump. She recorded a jump of 1.65 meters, only two centimeters below her personal best, marking a fitting conclusion to her time representing Tufts.
Long Jump and Hammer Throw Highlights
Elysse Cumberland continued to impress, taking third place in the long jump with a distance of 5.70 meters, securing her position among notable competitors from various NCAA divisions. Ceci LaBarge also achieved a new personal record in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.12 meters, an improvement of 90 centimeters, earning her a fifth-place finish in the event.
Looking Ahead
With the successful performances at the M.I.T. Final Qualifier, the Jumbos are set to shift their focus to the NCAA Division III Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, taking place next weekend in Geneva, Ohio.
