Tufts University Women’s Track and Field Earns Third Place at Championships

MIDDLETOWN, CONN. (April 26, 2025) – The Tufts University women’s track and field team showcased a strong performance at the 2025 New England Small College Athletic Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Wesleyan University. The team secured an impressive third place overall.

Key Individual Achievements

Freshman Makayla Moriarty stood out by clinching victory in the 400m run, achieving a personal best time of 55.96 seconds, narrowly missing the school record by just a tenth of a second. This time ranks as the 22nd best in NCAA Division III history.

Personal Records Shattered

  • Arielle Chechile finished third in the 400m Hurdles with a personal record of 1:02.22.
  • Senior Emma Smith followed closely in fourth place, recording a personal best of 1:03.01.
  • Phoebe Bryar recorded a new best in the 800m run with a time of 2:14.83.
  • Carly Rinko excelled in the 1500m with her personal best of 4:39.88.

Steeplechase Highlights

The 3000m steeplechase event witnessed remarkable performances, with Lexi Dean finishing seventh with a personal best of 11:15.00. Her teammates Taylor Neldner and Grace Doyle followed, also achieving personal records of 11:37.76 and 11:38.10, respectively.

Field Event Success

In field events, Elysse Cumberland emerged as a dominant force, winning both the triple jump and long jump. Her long jump victory came with a mark of 5.76m, just edging out a competitor from Middlebury. Subsequently, in the triple jump, Cumberland achieved a distance of 11.98m, the sixth best mark in NCAA Division III, defeating second-placed Jordan Andrew by 22 centimeters.

Additional Performances

  • Mia Kurtz recorded a personal best in shot put with a throw of 12.14m, earning third place.
  • Julia Saporito also set a new personal best in the discus throw, achieving a toss of 38.41m for third place.

Looking Ahead

The Jumbos will take a brief break before heading to New London for the New England Division III Championships, scheduled for May 2.
