Women’s Tennis Match Preview
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team is poised to return to the winning side this Sunday. They will be hosting the Prairie View A&M (PVAMU) Panthers at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, with the match scheduled to commence at 10 a.m.
Currently, UTRGV holds a formidable 18-2 record against PVAMU, with an overall season record of 1-1 (0-0 Southland Conference). Last season’s match was unfortunately canceled due to bad weather. The Vaqueros have emerged victorious in their last two encounters with the Panthers, most recently celebrating a 5-2 victory in Edinburg in 2023, where junior Valentina Urraco marked her first collegiate singles win.
The Vaqueros have made a strong start at home, achieving a 6-1 victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville in their season opener. After facing a challenging defeat at St. Mary’s earlier this week, they are eager to secure a win. Despite their historical success against the Panthers, the Vaqueros remain cautious; PVAMU previously secured a narrow 4-3 victory in Edinburg in 2021, and four of their last five losses this season have been against the same opponent.
Notable performance this season comes from sophomore Rhea Makesar, who has been flawless so far with a perfect record across two matches in her inaugural spring season at UTRGV. Teaming up with freshman Mariia Bakhtina, Makesar has not only contributed to the team’s success in doubles but has also excelled in the No. 2 singles position, securing two wins in both formats.
This match is free of charge, and the local community is warmly invited to come out and support the Vaqueros. Additionally, this event is part of a Sunday doubleheader at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, with the men’s teams from both institutions set to compete shortly after the conclusion of the women’s match.
