RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s tennis team is gearing up for their season and home opener this Saturday, facing off against the Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) Javelinas at 1 p.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UTRGV boasts a strong historical record against the Javelinas, holding a 14-3 advantage in their all-time series and having secured three consecutive victories. Last season, the Vaqueros triumphed with a 5-2 win in Kingsville, and they also achieved a dominant 6-1 victory in Edinburg back in 2022.
Nonetheless, the Vaqueros are mindful of the challenges that come with a season opener. With a roster featuring several newcomers, maintaining mental resilience will be crucial for their success.
“Kingsville is a well-coached team and has always given us tough matches in the past, so we’re approaching this seriously. The nerves can be intense for the first match of the season, making it a real contest,” said head coach West Nott. “We need to focus on overcoming any self-doubt to have a great outing. Having a positive outlook, a strong attitude, and high energy will yield great results.”
To prepare for the upcoming match, the Vaqueros have been focusing on “playing points” to simulate a competitive atmosphere. They even adjusted their practice schedule to practice in the afternoon, aiming to acclimate to the predicted match-day temperatures. Coach Nott commended the team for their commitment and vibrant energy since returning to campus, expressing enthusiasm for the season ahead.
“The team has a lot to prove this year. Everyone is coming back with a renewed mindset, eager to improve on last season’s performance. It’s thrilling to work with such motivated players,” Nott added.
