Match Recap: Gardner-Webb vs. Mercer

The Gardner-Webb women’s soccer team faced a challenging game against Mercer, concluding with a 5-0 defeat. The competition took place on Sunday afternoon in Macon, GA, where the Runnin’ Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm early on.

First Half Highlights

Gardner-Webb’s performance suffered initially, as they were largely outmatched in possession and shot attempts. Senior goalkeeper Savannah Dixon showcased her skills with impressive saves during the opening minutes. Despite her efforts, Mercer capitalized on their opportunities, scoring goals in the 14th and 18th minutes, establishing a quick 2-0 advantage.

As the first half progressed, Gardner-Webb showed resilience. Senior defender Camila Lezcano and forward Kaitlyn Huff each forced saves from the Mercer goalie shortly after the second goal. However, as the half drew to a close, Mercer extended their lead to 3-0 with a goal in the 27th minute.

Second Half Performance

The Runnin’ Bulldogs continued to apply pressure at the start of the second half, creating several scoring chances. Notable attempts included a shot from Lezcano that sailed high in the 47th minute, a save from a strike by freshman midfielder Ellie Breitenstein in the 58th minute, and another attempt by freshman forward Asza Leighton in the 81st minute.

Despite these efforts, Mercer sealed their win with two additional goals in the final ten minutes, marking a comprehensive 5-0 victory for the Bears.

Key Player Statistics

  • Savannah Dixon: 8 saves (game-high)
  • Camila Lezcano: 3 shots (team-high)
  • Julia McBride and Katie Stefanovski: 2 shots each

Looking Ahead
