Lynchburg Women’s Soccer Falls Short Against No. 9 Washington & Lee

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg women’s soccer team faced a tough challenge on Homecoming Saturday, losing 1-0 to the ninth-ranked Washington & Lee Generals at Shellenberger Field. The decisive goal came from Elizabeth Zimmerman in the 26th minute.

Match Overview

Despite being outshot 15-7, the Hornets managed to place six shots on target alongside the Generals. Lynchburg held a slight edge in possession, maintaining 52% compared to W&L’s 48%, while also earning a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Key Moments

  • Early Dominance: Washington & Lee initiated the encounter with the first eight shots, culminating in Zimmerman’s early goal. Positioned outside the 18-yard box, she maneuvered around the defense and placed a well-aimed shot past goalkeeper Kate Shepherd.
  • Opportunities Missed: Both teams exchanged scoring chances throughout the first half, but neither side could find the back of the net after Zimmerman’s strike. Lynchburg’s offensive efforts included six corner kicks, yet the team struggled to capitalize on these opportunities.
  • Second Half Pressure: The Hornets intensified their efforts in the second half, showcasing improved possession and generating several attempts to level the score.

Notable Performances

In the 57th minute, Rylee Wampler’s strike required a remarkable save from Generals keeper Kate McEnroe, who recorded a total of six saves during the match. Additionally, a promising two-on-one breakaway opportunity for Lynchburg nearly materialized, but a misdirected pass failed to reach forward McKayla Hargrove.

Match Outcome

The game concluded with the Hornets unable to equalize, marking their third straight defeat, each by a single goal. The loss reflects ongoing challenges for the team, which now sits in seventh place in the ODAC standings with a total of 10 points.

Looking Ahead

Lynchburg will aim to bounce back as they prepare to visit Guilford for a match scheduled on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. at Appenzeller Field.
