UTRGV Women’s Soccer Team Begins 2025 Season Preparations
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer team commenced their training for the upcoming 2025 season on Tuesday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. This day symbolizes a new beginning for both players and coaching staff.
Head Coach Mark Foster expressed his enthusiasm about the first day of practice, emphasizing its importance: “This is the best day of the year for me. We get to be back with the team and be on the grass. We do a lot of work over the summer, and when this day comes, there is nothing better.” Foster acknowledged the players’ commitment over the summer as they prepared themselves through running and workouts. He noted, “I am really excited for the season. We tell the girls to enjoy it, and as coaches, we need to remember that as well.”
Last season, the Vaqueros finished with a record of 7-7-5 and participated in the Southland Conference Tournament. This year, they aim to improve upon that record, bolstered by the return of 13 players from last season, along with five new additions. Foster highlighted the importance of team chemistry, noting, “We were a young team last year, and most of those girls are returning. This year’s class is focused on quality over quantity. I really believe in our returning group.”
The team’s schedule includes two upcoming exhibition matches—one against Monterrey Tech on August 7 and another at Texas A&M on August 9—leading up to the regular season opener against Tarleton State on August 14. Foster underscored the importance of utilizing the preparation time effectively, stating, “There is no time to rest. We will be doing two sessions a day—a morning fitness emphasis and an evening session focused on tactics and team play.”
Communication among team members is also a critical focus during the preseason. Foster aims to foster an environment where players, coaches, and support staff all work collaboratively. He remarked, “It’s important that we are fluid and together. The better we understand each other, the better we will perform on the field. With this continuity, I expect to see significant progress this year.”
As the 2025 season approaches, the Vaqueros are eager to embark on what promises to be an exciting journey.
