USC Upstate Women’s Soccer Falls Short Against Gardner-Webb

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In a competitive showdown at County University Soccer Stadium, the USC Upstate women’s soccer team faced off against Gardner-Webb in their latest Big South conference match, unfortunately concluding with a narrow 1-0 defeat.

Match Overview

The game opened with USC Upstate striking first, as Dara Russo recorded the initial shot just six minutes into the match. Throughout the game, Russo dominated the attack, leading her team with six shots, four of which were on target. However, Gardner-Webb’s defense held strong, maintaining their lead after scoring the only goal in the 18th minute of the first half.

First Half Highlights

  • In the early stages, Dara Russo’s shot set the tone for Upstate’s offense.
  • Gardner-Webb responded quickly, attempting multiple shots shortly after Russo’s attempt.
  • Despite attempts from Adrianna Pepe, whose shot was saved, the Runnin’ Bulldogs found success with their goal in the 18th minute.
  • Goalkeeper Marley Gerber executed two critical saves before halftime, keeping the score close.

Second Half Developments

Resuming play, Paige Armstrong made the first shot attempt of the second half, reflecting Upstate’s resolve to equalize. Despite a promising opportunity—drawing a foul inside the box resulting in a penalty kick—Upstate was thwarted as the Gardner-Webb goalkeeper made another pivotal save.

As the half progressed, Gerber continued to perform robustly, adding another save in the 61st minute. Both teams exchanged shots but were unable to change the scoreboard.

Statistical Highlights

Despite the loss, there were notable individual performances:

  • Dara Russo achieved a season-high with six shots and tied her personal best with four shots on goal.
  • Maddy DeCola established a new career standard with four shot attempts.

Looking Ahead

USC Upstate will take a break from conference action as they prepare to face South Carolina State on Saturday, October 25th, at 5:30 p.m. This match promises to be an exciting opportunity for the Spartans to bounce back.
