Marywood University Athletics: Recent Highlights

Women’s Soccer

Marywood University’s women’s soccer team took on Saint Elizabeth University in their second conference match of the season. The Pacers showcased a strong first half, scoring four goals, with Yianna Mazzella netting the first. Following her, Riley Bittenbender, Bella Wright, and Katie Baker also contributed to the scoreline. In the second half, Carly Walters scored her 10th goal of the season, sealing a decisive 6-0 victory for Marywood.

In a match against Centenary, seniors Carly Walters, Caroline Walters, Rylee Alston, Britlyn Higgins, Mazzella, and Lydia Mariotti were honored for their contributions to the program. The game began slowly for the Pacers, as they led only 2-1 at halftime. However, Carly Walters turned the tide in the second half with a hat trick, leading to a final score of 6-1.

Men’s Soccer

The men’s soccer team hosted Saint Elizabeth University in their first conference match of the year, achieving a solid 4-0 win. Jack Forbes struck first just before the 30th minute, assisted by Alex Visha, who later added his own goal in the same half. The second half saw two additional goals for Marywood, cementing their dominance.

Later, Marywood faced Centenary University, securing a commanding 4-1 victory. Hayden Slater opened the scoring early, followed by a goal from Owen Clearwaters, leading 2-0 at halftime. Additional goals by Jason Camardo and Ryan Surowiec in the second half ensured a comfortable win for the Pacers.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team achieved remarkable success, starting the week with a decisive 7-0 win over King’s College, winning all six singles matches. Avianna Santarelli, Catarina English, and Hannah Brownlee all achieved perfect scores of 6-0, 6-0. In doubles matches, Marywood won two out of three encounters.

Unfortunately, the team faced its first defeat against Wilkes University. Only Avianna Santarelli and Hanna Adonizio managed to secure wins in their respective singles matches, leaving the final score at 5-2.

Men’s Tennis

The men’s tennis team improved its season record to 5-2 with a historic win over King’s College, their first since the 2012-13 season. The Pacers dominated the doubles matches before continuing their success in singles, with Gavin Gagliardi and Zane Smoker both achieving shutouts in their matches, leading to a 7-0 victory.

Despite this success, they fell to Wilkes University with a score of 5-2. Gagliardi and Aiden Brunner were the only players to secure victories on the day.

Women’s Volleyball

The Marywood volleyball team achieved a milestone with their first-ever win against Drew University, triumphing in straight sets with scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-18. Carolina Samaniego led the team with nine kills, supported by Taylor Hallam and Genevieve Pollock, each contributing seven kills. Ayla Bransford’s 28 assists were instrumental in this victory.

Marywood further solidified their winning streak with a second 3-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark, bringing the season record to an impressive 18-1.

Field Hockey

The Pacers faced a tough match against Misericordia, resulting in a 3-1 loss despite Olivia Seidel’s equalizing goal in the 44th minute. However, two late goals from Misericordia sealed the defeat. Looking to rebound, Marywood engaged Gwynedd Mercy, where they initially trailed but rallied, with Seidel again tying the game. Goals from Addison Marcin and Darine Jones in the fourth quarter secured a 3-2 comeback victory.

Swimming and Diving

The women’s swimming and diving team kicked off the season impressively, achieving two victories: a 213-36 win over King’s College and a 172.2-101.5 win against Wilkes University, starting the year 2-0. Conversely, the men’s team was unable to match their success, losing to King’s College 133-105 and to Wilkes University with a score of 197-57.
