In a pivotal matchup on Saturday afternoon, the Brown women’s soccer team secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Cornell in Ithaca, improving their record to 9-2-4 overall and 3-1-2 in Ivy League play. This win propelled the Bears into second place in the league standings, placing them in a strong position ahead of their upcoming match against No. 1 Princeton.

The Bears approached this game on the heels of a 2-2 draw against Harvard, which had left them on the edge of qualification for the Ivy League tournament. However, Saturday’s performance marked a decisive turnaround.

“The team, as well as the coaching staff, hold each other to a standard that we know we are capable of each and every day,” said Addison Etter, a first-year goalkeeper who made her debut start for Brown.

From the outset, Brown displayed composure and tactical superiority, dominating possession and persistently pressuring Cornell’s defense. The Bears’ initial shot came just 8 minutes into the match when a well-placed pass found Joy Okonye, a 2024 First Team All-Ivy midfielder. Although Okonye’s shot was blocked, it resulted in Brown’s third corner kick within the first nine minutes.

Defensively, Brown held strong, with Etter facing only two shots on goal in the first half, both of which she saved.

“I could be confident stepping into the net knowing I had the confidence of my team in front of me,” Etter stated. “Even though it was my first full 90 minutes, the coaching staff made sure I felt prepared, and I am grateful for their support and belief in my ability to step in net for this team.”

The score remained 0-0 until the 30th minute when the Bears broke the deadlock. Nadja Meite sent a lofted ball from beyond midfield to Angelina Vargas, who quickly assisted Okonye for her seventh goal of the season.

With that goal, Okonye not only took the lead in the Ivy League for goals scored but also ranked first in points and tied for first in assists.

Seven minutes after the initial goal, Brown capitalized on a corner taken by Audrey Lam. In a hectic scramble near the goal, Corine Gregory scored after a series of deflections, pushing the Bears’ lead to 2-0 at halftime.

“I’m really excited for this team and proud that we’ve put ourselves in a position to compete for the Ivy League Championship,” commented Head Coach Kia McNeill. “This group is special, and I want to keep coaching them as long as possible.”

Entering the second half, Cornell aimed to mount a comeback, forcing Brown to remain vigilant. Just a minute in, Cornell’s first corner kick nearly resulted in a goal as Etter made a crucial save to preserve the Bears’ advantage.

“Etter was tremendous in goal,” noted McNeill. “She handled a lot of set pieces and service into the box really well. Her calmness and composure helped us manage those moments effectively.”

“I’m really happy with the result and the way the team played today,” said McNeill. “It wasn’t always pretty, but we grinded it out to get the win and the shutout.”

With the final whistle signaling a 2-0 victory, Brown takes a significant step toward securing a spot in the Ivy League tournament. They will host No. 1 Princeton this coming Saturday, with the match set to kick off at 1 p.m. A win would potentially allow Brown to claim the top seed for the tournament.

“Coming off an important win at Cornell, I think the team is excited to get into training this weekend and prepare full force ahead to put up a fight and great performance against the Tigers,” Etter expressed. “We definitely have the talent to do well in the Ivy tournament and beyond, but all we are focusing on is one game at a time.”
