Tufts University Women’s Sailing Team Advances to Nationals

ST. MARY’S CITY, MD (May 21, 2025) – The women’s sailing team from Tufts University has successfully qualified for the finals of the ICSA Fleet Race National Championship. The team secured their spot by finishing in ninth place during the Western Semifinal, following a competitive performance.

Performance Overview

Entering the semifinal event ranked 12th, the Jumbos faced a challenging day of racing. A strong showing on the second day propelled them to a final score of 170, with 112 points accrued in A division and 58 points in B division. Their close competitors, the U.S. Naval Academy, finished just behind with a score of 181.

Racing Conditions and Results

The initial day of the semifinals was hindered by a lack of wind, limiting the number of races. However, the conditions improved on the final day, allowing for six races in A division and seven in B division, culminating in a total of nine completed races across both divisions over the two days.

B Division Highlights

The B division team, comprising first-year skipper Sophia Hubbard and junior crew member Lilly Ladd, excelled, achieving six top-nine finishes in their seven races, including three third-place finishes. Their performance earned them a fifth-place overall score in B division.

A Division Highlights

In A division, senior skipper Maisie MacGillivray teamed with sophomore crew Eloise Goedkoop for the first five races, after which first-year skipper Kiana Beachy took over with senior crew Annie De Alessi for the final race. Despite challenges, the A division team managed a ninth-place finish in their opening race.

Semifinal Standings

Yale University led the Western Semifinal, finishing in first place with a score of 57. Along with Tufts, the following schools also qualified for the finals: Georgetown University, Brown University, Tulane University, Northeastern University, College of Charleston, and George Washington University.

Looking Ahead

The nine teams that advanced from the Western Semifinal will compete in the ICSA Women’s Fleet Race National Championship Finals starting tomorrow at 9:30 AM.
