Weekly Sports Update: Women’s Teams Performances
Women’s Hockey Continues Winning Streak
The women’s hockey team maintained its unbeaten record with impressive back-to-back victories against Robert Morris, finishing each game with a score of 4-0. The defense showcased exceptional performance, allowing only 31 shots on goal throughout the series, with goalie Katie DeSa achieving a shutout in one of the games. Although Tessa Janecke saw her ten-game point streak come to an end in Game 2, she contributed significantly in Game 1 with one goal and an assist. Maddy Christian notably scored two goals in the first period of the second match, leading the team’s offensive efforts.
After this successful weekend, the team will take a brief hiatus before returning to conference play against Syracuse next weekend.
Women’s Soccer Bows Out of Big Ten Tournament
The women’s soccer team encountered a challenging quarterfinal in the Big Ten Tournament, losing 2-1 to UCLA. Kaitlyn MacBean managed to net the only goal for Penn State in the first half, giving the Nittany Lions a brief 1-0 lead. However, the defense faltered during the second half, allowing two goals that secured UCLA’s advancement.
Looking ahead, Penn State’s chances of an NCAA Tournament berth remain strong, although the team will not host the initial rounds. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, November 10.
Volleyball Struggles Continue
The women’s volleyball team, currently holding a record of 13-9, faced difficulties after a brief recovery from early-season struggles. They lost a tough five-set match to Michigan, where Kennedy Martin delivered an exceptional performance with 27 kills, yet the team could not secure victory in the decisive fifth set. In a subsequent match, the team was swept by Indiana despite achieving a higher hitting percentage and more blocks. Indiana’s strong performance was highlighted by their dominance in the second set, where they also recorded six aces.
Penn State will now travel to face Purdue on Friday at 5:30 PM (Big Ten Plus) and Illinois on Sunday at 4:30 PM (BTN).
Men’s Soccer Ends Regular Season with Narrow Loss
In its penultimate regular season match, the men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ohio State. Struggling to penetrate the Buckeyes’ defense, Penn State managed only two shots on goal while Jonathan Evans made four saves to keep the game within reach. The team will conclude the regular season by hosting Michigan on Friday at 8 PM (Big Ten Plus).
Field Hockey Season Wraps Up
The field hockey team concluded its season with a 4-2 loss to Rutgers. Ella Jennes and Natalie Freeman each scored for the Nittany Lions; however, Rutgers established an early lead and never looked back, jumping out to a 3-0 advantage in the first period. Despite the challenging season, Sophia Mannino was recognized as a Second Team All-Big Ten selection for her standout performances on the defensive line.
