Snoop Dogg’s Shift in Attitude Towards Women: Implications for Sports Culture

Cultural Relevance and Recent Context

Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr., popularly known as Snoop Dogg, has become a figure of cultural significance, performing at high-profile events such as the Paris Olympics and the American Super Bowl. This relevance has elevated discussions around his past and present attitudes towards women, prompting reactions from various stakeholders including women’s safety organizations.

Representatives from entities like Our Watch have called on the Australian Football League (AFL) to address these concerns, emphasizing the power of sports events to promote a culture of respect and equality.

Understanding the Impact of Attitudes on Violence Against Women

Cara Gleeson, acting chief executive of Our Watch, highlighted strong evidence linking attitudes that condone violence against women to increased rates of actual violence. “Grand finals are some of the most watched events in Australia and provide an important opportunity to promote a culture of respect and equality, both on and off the field,” she stated.

Patty Kinnersly, the organization’s chief executive, previously discussed the necessity of engaging men in conversations about ending violence against women, signaling a shift needed in sports culture.

Snoop Dogg’s Evolving Perspective

Snoop Dogg has publicly acknowledged a change in his attitudes towards women since 2013, reflecting on discussions with artists like Dionne Warwick and Pharrell Williams. He admits to having no regrets about his past lyrical content, despite its criticism for being harmful. Notably, his earlier songs, such as “Can U Control Yo Hoe,” contained explicit language that has led to serious backlash.

Criticism of Past Remarks

Oprah Winfrey labeled Snoop Dogg a “misogynist” due to these lyrics, and his reflections during a 2013 interview with Rolling Stone drew further criticism when he spoke of past experiences, including his involvement in pimping. These statements highlighted his controversial history while also underscoring his claims of personal evolution.

Public Stance on Gender Equality

Years later, Snoop Dogg has emerged as a supporter of equal pay for the US women’s soccer team, and he has collaborated with Martha Stewart in a cooking series, showcasing a lighter, more inclusive side. As Fitz-Gibbon noted, while Snoop Dogg has distanced himself from his past attitudes, featuring him in prominent sports settings may counteract efforts to promote violence prevention initiatives in Australia.

Conclusion: The Broader Implications

The evolution of Snoop Dogg’s views on women prompts a reiteration of the importance of cultural change within sports. The AFL and other organizations have a unique opportunity to highlight messages of respect and equality, utilizing their platforms to address past issues and foster a new narrative.
