On Saturday morning, the Washington and Lee women’s cross country team showcased their competitive spirit at the 2025 Roanoke South Region Showdown, securing a commendable third-place finish. This event, held at Green Hill Park, served as a crucial preview of the course for the upcoming regional championships, where the Generals will aim to protect their title won in 2024.
The Generals accumulated a total of 84 points at the meet, placing them behind Division I East Tennessee State, which scored 31 points, and Ohio Northern with 65 points. Washington and Lee outperformed several competitors, including Southern Virginia (99 points) and Lynchburg (109 points), in a challenging 23-team field.
First-year runner Maddy Morgan led the way for W&L, finishing 14th overall with a time of 22:43.7. She was closely followed by her teammate, Josie Engle, who placed 15th with a time of 22:44.3. Additional contributions came from fellow freshmen Adelaide Ellis (22nd, 23:20.8) and Amelia Weenig (27th, 23:38.4), along with sophomore Lane Smith (33rd, 23:46.2). Junior Mary Gorsky (42nd, 24:06.1) and first-year Audrey Robinson (44th, 24:12.9) also participated, completing the squad’s efforts.
This race marked the first collegiate competition for many of W&L’s first-year athletes at Green Hill Park, which is set to host the NCAA South Region Championships later this fall. For a comprehensive overview of the event’s results, see here.
