Rebranding of Women’s Football in England: A New Era for WSL
The landscape of women’s football in England is undergoing a significant transformation. As of the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, the Women’s Championship and the Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) have both been unified under a new branding initiative, enhancing their visibility and presence in the sport.
Introducing Women’s Super League Football
The WPLL, the governing body for the top two tiers of women’s football, will now operate under the name Women’s Super League Football (WSL Football). This rebranding marks a pivotal moment for women’s football, aiming to foster greater recognition and growth.
League Name Changes
The Women’s Championship, recently secured by the London City Lionesses, will now be referred to as the Barclays Women’s Super League 2 (Barclays WSL2). The top-tier league will continue as the Women’s Super League (WSL).
A Fresh Identity for the Leagues
WSL Football has unveiled a new visual identity tailored to resonate with the movement and uniqueness of female footballers. This concept was developed in collaboration with creative agency Anomaly and EA Sports.
Color Distinction and Online Presence
- Each league will adopt a unique color scheme for easy identification.
- A new website for WSL Football is set to launch later this summer.
Ruth Hooper, Chief Marketing Officer of WSL Football, emphasized the creativity behind this initiative, stating, “Developing this new visual world with Anomaly has been a real labour of love. No one plays football like a female – it is our strength and the way players move is one element of what makes women’s football distinctive and special.”
Hooper continued, “There is a lot more in store over the coming months as we continue to grow the women’s game for the future.”
Partnership with Sky Sports
In an exciting development, Sky Sports has secured a landmark five-year agreement with WSL Football. This partnership will see Sky broadcasting nearly 90% of all Women’s Super League matches starting from the 2025/26 season.
Broadcasting Details
Under this agreement, Sky will increase its coverage dramatically, airing 118 matches each season—over triple the current number—with 78 of these being exclusive broadcasts. Key features of the deal include:
- Exclusive rights to first-choice matches and those from the closing weekend.
- Coverage of the Women’s Championship and Women’s League Cup, including the final.
Sky Sports is committed to elevating women’s football through a significant investment in marketing and production. This includes enhanced social media outreach across platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, aimed at expanding the audience for the WSL.
Fans can also enjoy free match highlights from every WSL game on Sky Sports’ digital platforms, ensuring accessibility to all matches and fostering a broader fan base.
This rebranding and partnership signify not only a new chapter for women’s football in England but also a commitment to its growth on multiple fronts. As changes unfold, both leagues are poised to capture the heart of the sport and broaden their fan engagement.
